Word of mouth is that God of War 3 is really helping Sony move some systems. Friends and forum members are claiming that PS3s are selling out. Now this can simply be just mere coincidence, but it's hard to deny the juggernaut titles that gamers are flocking to scoop up to play on a brand spanking new PS3. We're talking about heavy hitter titles like the aforementioned GOW3 and of course, Final Fantasy XIII.
Although FFXIII may be a multiplatform game, it goes without saying that the PS3 version is superior to its 360 counterpart, based largely on the sheer storage capability of the Blu-Ray disc versus the disc-swapping madness that 360 gamers must endure on their standard DVD media. But are these two games the driving force behind the recent surge in PS3 sales? Or has the PS3 re-branding finally caught on with the mass market? The answer will be revealed in the coming months, especially if the PS3 market-share can be sustained months after the release of their arguably best and most recognizable franchise, namely the God of War series.
So what now, Sony? Are there any aces up your sleeve? It's doubtful that God of War 4 will make it during the remaining life cycle of the PS3. That honor will probably go to the PS4. So what else can Sony count on? Surely, it can't be the PS3 Move -- their answer to the Wii.
As covered earlier in our report on the PlayStation Move, we tackled the tough issue of deciding if the motion controller was a bold and genius move for Sony, or just a stroke of stupidity and a giant misstep. Convincing arguments can be made for both sides, but the fact remains that the motion control sub-genre of gaming already has a clear winner -- the Wii. It is too late to play catch up with something that has captured the hearts and imagination of the mass market for nearly half a decade now. The PS3 Move fills a niche for Sony's portfolio, but it hardly can overcome the phenomenon that is the Wii at this late stage.
Recently, we covered the release of 3D televisions and their possible impact on the gaming landscape. Movies like Avatar have really propelled the appeal of 3D entertainment into the global mindset of this generation. So much so that Sony is banking on families welcoming home a 3D television set. Sony hopes to make past and future games compatible with this expensive new technology. But has Sony really put too much faith in one basket?

We would caution against betting against Sony though. They masterminded the adoption of Blu-Ray and buried the competition, HD-DVD, in the process. So don't put it against Sony for striking it rich again with 3D gaming. Pre-orders are already on sale for a remastered edition of Batman: Arkham Aslyum GOTY 3D Edition. So in all likelihood, Batman: Arkham Aslyum 2, which is also available for pre-order on Amazon, will feature 3D as well.
Admittedly, the expenses of adopting this new 3D technology does set up a huge hurdle, but as the past has shown, prices always eventually go down. Five years down the road, it is very possible that Sony will be revealed as a winner again. But for the sake of Sony's immediate future, it really depends on the release of a stable of triple-A titles, beyond God of War 3, to sustain the momentum Sony has recently built up. It really depends on whether or not Sony can launch another hit new series on the PS3. Or hitting it big with the casual market with their PS3 Move peripheral. To do either you need games.
So where are the new hot games, Sony? Where is L.A. Noir? With it going multiplatform now, does it even matter? Is Rockstar's PS3 exclusive title, Agent, any consolation? Infamous was a good effort, but not the system seller everyone was banking on. Resistance and Killzone 2 tried capturing the FPS market, but ultimately fizzled when compared against the 360's Gears of War and Halo franchises. LittleBigPlanet was a nice thought, but too many problems plagued it, like the lack of great community levels. Heavy Rain will be looked back as a ground-breaking example for video games as art, but the sales will not reflect its genius. What we need now are new block-buster franchises. And they can't do it alone. Bring back the 3rd Party Developers, Sony. It's time to show us what 'ya got!
